Nepal Maoists ask Carter to mediate

Less than a month after the American ambassador to Nepal, James Francis Moriarty, created a controversy by saying he would have shaken hands with Prachanda, chief of the Maoist guerrillas, if the rebels turned over a new leaf and really gave up violence, one of America’s best known sons, former president and Nobel laureate Jimmy Carter, on Friday went ahead and did it without any precondition. The 84-year-old Carter, who has been meeting Nepal’s key politicians and other dignitaries playing an important role in the peace negotiations, on Friday shook hands with the chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), still considered a terrorist organisation by Washington, and held discussions with him for nearly an hour.
