Khalid Shaikh Mohammed may have been sleeping when authorities raided the suburban house in Pakistan where he was hiding, but he was dreaming up fresh terrorist strikes against the United States and the Arabian peninsula, a U.S. official said yesterday. Knowledge of the plots being devised by Mr. Mohammed contributed to the U.S. government’s decision in February to raise the country’s threat-alert for terrorist attacks, U.S. Homeland Security chief Tom Ridge said. “Some of the concerns we had that caused us to raise the threat level were attributable to the planning he was involved in,” Mr. Ridge said in Washington. Newsweek reports that an intelligence memo dated Feb. 26 warned that Mr. Mohammed was planning attacks on suspension bridges, gas stations and power plants in New York elsewhere. Full Story
