A state of emergency was declared on Friday for the centre of the eastern New Zealand city of Gisborne after a powerful 6.8 earthquake flattened buildings and caused widespread damage. No major injuries have been reported after Thursday night’s quake, which was felt throughout much of New Zealand, but residents of Gisborne, on the east coast of the North Island, woke to widespread devastation.
