Police seize radioactive cargo destined for Baghdad

A cargo of medical equipment bound for Iraq was seized at Zurich Airport Friday after it was found to be emitting radiation. The load was checked by customs officials aboard a Royal Jordanian flight that was due to fly to Amman, said police spokesman Hans Baltensperger. “It was seized, and we are now trying to establish whether the cargo declaration was wrong or whether the packing was faulty,” he said. Police checks so far suggest that the cargo — 24 packages described as medical diagnostic equipment — conforms with U.N. sanctions against Iraq, Baltensperger said. The packages had arrived from Paris and were due to fly on to Amman before being transported overland to the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. Baltensperger declined to give any details about the shipper or the recipient. There was no danger to passengers who traveled on the flight from Paris, he added.
