A federal judge is weighing whether to hold Iran responsible for the 1983 truck bombing of a U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, after completing a two-day trial in the lawsuit by more than 600 relatives of the victims, lawyers said on Wednesday. The bombing on Oct. 23, 1983, killed 241 U.S. military members and wounded many others. The lawsuit was filed at the end of 2001, and U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth ruled in December 2002 the lawsuit could go forward under a 1996 law used by U.S. citizens to sue nations found to sponsor terrorism. It was not known when the judge would rule on whether Iran was liable. Lawyers for the 661 plaintiffs urged at the hearing that the judge rule by the 20th anniversary of the attack, which they alleged was masterminded by Iran’s leaders. Full Story
