Apple to Source Billions of US-Made Chips in Supply Chain Shift

Apple Inc. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said the company is planning to source more than 19 billion chips from the US for its devices. The company will source tens of millions of processors from a new facility in Arizona this year, Cook said. The CEO is referring to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. plants in the state, which have started making processors for low-end iPads and Apple Watches, Bloomberg News has reported. Cook made the comments on a conference call Thursday to discuss second-quarter earnings. President Donald Trump has been pushing US companies to build technology in the US, and has imposed tariffs on goods exported from China. Cook has been pursuing ways to avoid those. The Apple CEO also discussed how the company sources glass for iPhone screens from the US, likely referring to Corning Inc. Earlier this year, Apple said it would invest $500 billion in the US over the next four years, including by manufacturing AI servers at a plant in Texas.
