Atom Computing, Diraq, IBM and IonQ Advance to DARPA Final Stage of Quantum Benchmarking Initiative

DARPA has selected Atom Computing, Diraq, IBM, and IonQ to advance into Stage C of its rigorous Quantum Benchmarking Initiative (QBI). The chosen firms represent diverse hardware approaches—including neutral atoms, silicon spin qubits, superconducting processors, and trapped ions. In Stage C, these companies will partner with the government to build, test, and verify that their utility-scale quantum designs can operate as intended. Selected participants stand to receive up to $300 million in federal funding for the final validation phase aimed at achieving fault-tolerant quantum computing. This major milestone serves as a key reality check for the industry, narrowing down the field of competitors targeting commercially viable quantum systems by 2033.
