Rotem Bashi, a colonel in the Israel Defense Forces, says he just “can’t understand how this miracle was done.” Bashi is the commander of the IDF’s Matzpen software development unit, whose artificial intelligence system has greatly impressed him. “When I compare the quality of the answer from the system with the raw information it received, I don’t understand how the system connected it all,” he says. The military calls this AI project an “operational information factory” – it’s designed to gather much of the defense establishment’s operational information in one place and provide a quantum leap in the IDF’s use of AI. “If we had spoken a year or two ago, I would have told you how we’re far from using the system operationally,” Bashi says. “In the past few months, we’ve begun to see its capabilities in the closed IDF network. … This is why it’s realistic to introduce it toward the end of the year.” He adds: “I put a large amount of information of different types into the system, and the artificial intelligence provides insights that today, given the need for action in real time, are amazingly powerful.”
