China leads world in robotics and other physical AI patents

Huawei Technologies, Baidu and other Chinese companies have made China the global leader in patents for physical artificial intelligence that is used in humanoid robots, cars and other machines, as Beijing’s efforts to promote homegrown technology bear fruit. Physical AI is a major focus of technological development competition across the world. With the help of U.S. intellectual property information company LexisNexis, Nikkei Business Publications analyzed the quantity and quality of patents filed globally in the field. Chinese tech giants Baidu, Huawei Technologies and Tencent Holdings held the top three scores by company or organization. China’s Ping An Insurance secured sixth place. Although the Chinese companies lagged behind U.S. competitors like Intel, Nvidia and Alphabet in terms of patent quality, the analysis revealed that Huawei is approaching the level of its U.S. counterparts.
