Chinese automaker BYD has made significant strides in humanoid robotics, establishing a dedicated department under Chairman Wang Chuanfu. After recruiting talent last year, the company is ready to transition from R&D to mass production of humanoid robots. Before elevating the humanoid project to a full business unit, BYD assembled a specialized team to outline objectives and kickstart development. Wang’s oversight signals a shift to mass production preparations. His vision includes deploying humanoids in factories to replace human workers, aiming for full automation. The company’s three-pronged strategy: Phase 1—electric vehicles, Phase 2—intelligent vehicles, and Phase 3—autonomous vehicle production. Other Chinese automakers, including Xiaopeng, are venturing into humanoid robotics. Xiaopeng unveiled a humanoid robot named Iron in early November, which mimics human proportions. Already operational in Xiaopeng’s factory, it will soon be deployed in retail stores, offices, and homes.
