Gartner Warns AI Data Center Capital Expenditure Will Far Exceed Projected Revenue Through 2030

According to Gartner, global investments in AI data center infrastructure are on track to heavily outpace the revenue they will generate through the end of the decade. AI data center operators would need to pull in an estimated $8.5 trillion by 2030 to cover capital spending, financing costs, and investment returns. However, total enterprise and consumer AI revenue attributed to these data centers is projected to reach no more than $3.6 trillion during the same period. Analysts warn that smaller neocloud providers face severe financial pressure, with over 80% likely forced to cease independent operations as capital markets tighten. While major hyperscalers possess the cash reserves to absorb potential losses, the findings echo similar warnings from Bain & Co. regarding speculative infrastructure overspending.

Full report : New research highlights a massive financial mismatch, estimating that planned infrastructure spending will hit $8.5 trillion against just $3.6 trillion in expected AI revenue.
