His theory was simple: As organizations increasingly looked to software and online services to run more aspects of their businesses, it would soon become ubiquitous and define the winners and losers of the digital age. He wasn’t wrong. It made perfect sense if you look at the history of computing as a continuum over time. Over half a century, the industry evolved from primitive computers to microprocessors to a mature global internet and cloud computing. All the pieces for software’s global takeover fell into place perfectly. Never one to eschew hype, the technology industry responded quickly, as we started to hear “Every company is a software company!” shouted from the rooftops by tech executives the world over. As such, there’s little mystery around why today’s powerhouse cloud providers were catapulted into superstardom practically overnight, as industries came to rely on software solutions that helped them scale faster and more flexibly.
