The walk to the boardroom can easily feel like the longest business trip a CISO can take. In the early stages of my career, the industry was based on a trust model in which security leaders produced static PDF reports and annual penetration tests that were, even then, functionally obsolete the moment they were printed. Months after our penetration test results had started gathering dust, we hoped our defenses were still working. Though the odds of an attack were lower then, it could easily be a rather fraught elevator ride up to the executive boardroom. Today, relying on trust has become far too great a strategic risk in an era where AI-powered threats advance at machine speed. The traditional way of answering the board’s questions is now obsolete, not just because technology has advanced but also because the enemy has fundamentally altered the rules of engagement. We are confronting a defense crisis because the attacker has already embraced the AI transition.
