Meta Files With US Regulators to Start Selling Wholesale Power

Meta Platforms Inc. has filed an application with US federal regulators to sell electricity in wholesale markets. The company, which owns Facebook, submitted the filing Tuesday to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission asking for authorization “to sell energy, capacity, and certain ancillary services.” Buying more electricity has become an increasingly urgent challenge for big technology companies such as Meta, Microsoft Corp. and Alphabet Inc.’s Google. They’re all racing to develop more advanced artificial intelligence systems and tools that are notoriously resource-intensive. Power demand from the data centers used to build and run AI models is set to quadruple in 10 years, based on projections from BloombergNEF. Meta filed filed the application through a subsidiary, Atem Energy LLC. A representative for Meta said it was a logical step for the company to participate in energy markets. Atem was formed to act as a power marketer to sell energy, capacity and services at wholesale in the US, according to the filing.
