Daniel Gross, the former chief executive officer and co-founder of artificial intelligence startup Safe Superintelligence Inc., is joining Meta Platforms Inc.’s new superintelligence lab focused on AI. Gross will work on AI products for the superintelligence group, according to his spokesperson, Lulu Meservey. Meta just restructured its AI unit and has gone on a major hiring spree to recruit industry experts to develop AI technology that will match or exceed human-level competency, known as superintelligence. Ilya Sutskever, Gross’ co-founder at SSI and a former OpenAI chief scientist, announced Thursday that Gross was leaving the startup, but didn’t specify where he was headed. Sutskever is taking over as CEO of SSI, he posted on X.
Gross joins a slew of other high-profile hires for Meta’s new AI group. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has pushed aggressively to recruit top talent as part of a broader AI race against rivals like OpenAI and Alphabet Inc.’s Google. Zuckerberg has handled much of the recruiting outreach personally and has hosted potential hires at his personal homes in Palo Alto, California, and Lake Tahoe.
