Microsoft has issued a formal warning advising organizations to treat autonomous AI agents as potential insider security risks due to their broad access to corporate data and applications. Because agents can execute multi-step workflows, process documents, and write code at high speeds, unexpected behaviors or prompt injections could lead to unintended data exposure. Experts stress that AI models should not automatically inherit the full system permissions of their human supervisors or creators. To mitigate these risks, Microsoft advocates separating intelligence generation from operational authority by implementing independent, external security controls. Newly proposed tools—including expanded Entra Agent ID, dynamic permissions, and automated Guardian Agents—aim to give security teams real-time visibility and control over active enterprise models.
