Moonshot AI is in discussions to develop Kimi K4, a model that would be larger than its current K3 version, according to a report from The Information, citing two people with knowledge of the matter. The Beijing-based startup would require access to additional Nvidia advanced AI chips to train the new model, despite U.S. regulations that prohibit such technology from reaching Chinese companies. The company trained Kimi K3, the world’s largest open-source model with 2.8 trillion parameters, using Nvidia chips including the most advanced Blackwell versions, three people familiar with the matter said. This information confirms part of a statement made in a social media post by White House senior official Michael Kratsios. Moonshot is now seeking access to more Blackwell chips to prepare for developing future models such as K4, two of the sources said. Kratsios stated that Moonshot trained K3 at a data center in Thailand, where Chinese access to Nvidia chips might be permitted under U.S. regulations.
