Nvidia-backed Firmus signs deal with OpenAI for Malaysia data centre capacity

Firmus, the Australian AI infrastructure developer, signed a multi-year deal to supply OpenAI with computing capacity from two Malaysian data centres. The agreement takes contracted capacity across all customers above 900 megawatts. Neither side disclosed the contract value. Firmus is expected to list in Australia this year in what could be one of the country’s largest recent IPOs, and it was valued above $10.5 billion in its last fundraising. Nvidia is among the backers, alongside Jane Street, Blackstone funds and Coatue Management. Firmus will deploy Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin processors at scale across Asia-Pacific. Firmus runs two operational AI data centres, in Australia and Singapore, with five more under development across the region. Malaysia is Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing data centre market, though the buildout there has drawn scrutiny over electricity and water use. OpenAI unveiled Astra last week, which it called its most capable model yet.
