South Korea says it has enacted the world’s first comprehensive set of laws governing artificial intelligence. The six-chapter, 43-article “AI Basic Act” law took effect Thursday. South Korea’s laws cover an unusually vast terrain of activity and players, aiming to protect citizens and establish a “foundation for trust” in an AI society. Individual users aren’t targeted. Disclosures of using AI are required for areas related to human protection, such as producing drinking water or safe management of nuclear facilities. Companies must be able to explain their AI system’s decision-making logic, if asked, and enable humans to intervene. Users must be told, such as through a pop-up alert, that a service is powered by AI algorithms. That applies to things like a system to screen applicants for new loans or jobs.
