This autonomous warship startup is rewriting the rules of naval war

Even as China’s shipbuilding dominance grows, a traditional U.S. guided-missile destroyer can take up to nine years to deliver. Saronic, founded in Austin in 2022, is racing to produce autonomous vessels—from the six-foot Spyglass to the 180-foot Marauder—that can defend these multibillion-dollar ships and protect Western interests around the globe. Cofounder and CEO Dino Mavrookas, a veteran of SEAL Team Six with seven combat deployments, is demolishing slow, rusty approaches to boatbuilding by simplifying design and vertically integrating. Like defense tech giant Anduril or SpaceX before it, Saronic doesn’t wait for contracts but moves quickly by building software first and assuming the cost of the hardware up front.
