The Pentagon, along with the Department of Energy, on Sunday airlifted a small nuclear reactor, the first such transportation as the Trump administration looks to quickly deploy nuclear power across the U.S. The agencies moved the reactor in partnership with Valar Atomics, flying parts of one of the firm’s unfueled Ward 250 microreactors on a C-17 aircraft from March Air Reserve Base in California to Hill Air Force Base in Utah. The Ward 250 is a 5 megawatt nuclear reactor that could potentially power roughly 5,000 homes, according to the Pentagon. Valar Atomics in August announced it had been selected by the Energy Department to achieve criticality as part of one of the executive orders, and it is looking to sell power on a test basis in 2027 before becoming fully commercial in 2028. “The American nuclear renaissance is to get that ball moving again, fast, carefully, but with private capital, American innovation and determination,” Wright said. Proponents of microreactors say they are easily transported energy sources that can be sent to remote locations and don’t require frequent deliveries of fuel compared with generators. The reactor will eventually head to the Utah San Rafael Energy Lab for testing and evaluation, according to the Pentagon.
