US Troops Test Overland AI’s ULTRA Vehicle in Tactical Scenarios

US soldiers have tested Overland AI’s ULTRA autonomous ground vehicles across 15 live mission scenarios. Activities included pre-mission checks, payload integration, and munition loading. Troops used Overland’s OverWatch interface to plan, launch, and adjust operations in real-time. Assigned tasks included kinetic and electronic warfare breaching and the deployment of various payloads, including drones. ULTRA enabled operators to modify missions as field conditions evolved, including re-tasking vehicles and reconfiguring payloads in response to enemy movements under time-sensitive conditions. The company emphasized that planning for dual terrain-shaping missions, with more than 20 checkpoints and five tasks per vehicle, was completed in under three minutes. “Nearly every phase of the operation—from munition loading to software-based replanning—was in the hands of the Soldier. We saw real independence from the operator, not just in planning and execution, but in adapting tactics in real time,” said Chris Merz, director of product at Overland AI. Unveiled in April, ULTRA is built for operations in complex, high-risk environments, including areas without GPS access. The vehicle can travel up to 35 miles (56 kilometers) per hour and carry payloads of up to 1,000 pounds (453 kilograms). The modular design allows the platform to perform several missions, from reconnaissance and maneuver support to counter-drone defense and logistics in contested zones. ULTRA’s launch came after Overland AI secured an $18.6-million contract last year under the US Army and Defense Innovation Unit’s Robotic Combat Vehicle Program, aimed at integrating unmanned systems to support frontline troops.
