Why Agentic AI Needs Guardrails Before It Gets The Keys To The Enterprise

Today, most major AI labs are shipping some version of autonomous software that can browse the web, write code and execute multi-step tasks with minimal human oversight. The pitch is irresistible: Let AI do the busy work while leaders focus on strategy.​ But various experiments with AI agents are illustrating what can happen when this new level of autonomy bumps up against insufficient guardrails. One experiment, described in vivid detail in the Wall Street Journal (paywall), was designed by Anthropic’s red team to stress-test what might happen when an AI agent runs a small-scale business—in this case, a newsroom vending machine. The agent, Claudius, was given a simple enough directive: buy inventory and turn a profit.​
