World’s first underwater data centre powered entirely by offshore wind begins operations in China

The world’s first wind-powered underwater data centre has begun operations off the coast of Shanghai, as China pushes ahead with solutions to address the growing energy demands created by the AI boom. The Lingang Undersea Data Centre Demonstration Project, launched in May, has a total capacity of 24 megawatts. The project is a joint venture between HiCloud Technology and state-owned China Communications Construction Company. Designed as a demonstration facility, it aims to showcase how underwater infrastructure and renewable energy can be combined to support the next generation of AI-driven computing.
