A sophisticated cyberattack breached external refrigeration service providers linked to the French Blood Establishment (EFS), targeting cold storage facilities housing blood plasma, platelets, and vital medical samples. ttackers remotely accessed industrial refrigeration controllers including Danfoss and Dixell management units deliberately reprogramming systems to shift storage temperatures from a standard -30°C to an extreme 110°C. On-duty technicians and automated monitoring alarms detected the rapid temperature anomalies overnight, allowing emergency interventions that prevented any loss of blood products or public health impact. The incident marks an escalation in a broader cyber-physical campaign that has already hit commercial supermarket refrigeration units across more than 10 European countries, forcing massive food spoilage waste. Following prior alerts from France’s national cybersecurity agency (CERT-FR) regarding exposed internet-connected industrial management interfaces, authorities are pressing institutions to immediately isolate critical IoT hardware.
