Massive Cyberattack in Moldova Compromises Personal Data of One-Third of Population

A sophisticated cyberattack on Moldova’s government digital systems compromised the personal identification records of approximately 750,000 citizens, representing nearly a third of the country’s population. Stolen files included deep personal data sets such as full names, identity numbers, financial history, tax records, pension details, and family backgrounds. In response to the breach, Moldova’s Electronic Governance Agency proactively took more than 80 public electronic services offline to contain the threat and secure databases. Officials and security agencies warned that the stolen information risks being leveraged for coordinated financial fraud campaigns, scams, and broad social manipulation. President Maia Sandu convened an urgent national security meeting as investigators probed potential foreign interference behind the nation’s second major database compromise of the year.
