The silent watchers: how surveillance balloons are redefining intelligence in the sky

On Monday, UK technicians launched a high-altitude balloon to an altitude of 25 km, streaming live HD video back to mission control. Israel’s military sent balloons over Gaza to map tunnel networks, and Australian teams flew infrared-equipped balloons to spot wildfires and direct crews. Reports indicate that adversaries are preparing similar balloons with payloads of up to 150 kg, which are to be launched from unmarked sites. Security agencies have begun developing countermeasures to monitor and intercept these new stratospheric threats.
