The EU has approved a loan for Ukraine.
The EU formally approved a €90 billion support loan for Ukraine to cover urgent budgetary and defense needs across 2026–2027, with disbursements starting in the second quarter of 2026. The package is intended to avert deep cuts to public services and to fund defense spending, but economists warn the loan may not fully cover Kyiv’s rising military costs this year and could prompt higher defense budget forecasts. Only half of the loan will be disbursed in 2026, with the remainder in 2027, and much of the funding is earmarked for defense industrial capacity and procurement.
