Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend an existing ceasefire.
Beirut will press for an extension of a U.S.‑mediated ceasefire with Israel during a second round of ambassador‑level talks in Washington, after a ceasefire that reduced large‑scale fighting but was due to expire soon. Despite the lull, violence continued in southern Lebanon and the day before the talks was the deadliest since the ceasefire began, highlighting fragility on the ground. Lebanon says a ceasefire extension is a prerequisite for broader negotiations on detainees, border delineation and longer‑term security arrangements.
