The U.K. domestic intelligence agency, MI5, has published an urgent espionage alert warning universities and researchers about covert attempts by Chinese state actors to harvest sensitive intellectual property. The security service revealed that a front entity, the China General Technology Research Institute (CGTRI) has deep, obfuscated ties to China’s Ministry of State Security. More than 100 British-linked academics have reportedly contributed to research projects funded by the front, covering critical dual-use fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and covert communications. MI5 has strongly urged academic institutions to immediately review ongoing partnerships, carefully vet ultimate funding sources, and familiarize themselves with strict liabilities under the National Security Act 2023. Government ministers emphasized that while international academic collaboration remains vital, robust protective measures are essential to safeguard national security from evolving state-backed threats.
