Hurricane Karina strengthens far offshore in the Pacific.
Hurricane Karina intensified into a Category 4 storm with 145‑mph winds as it moved west more than a thousand miles off Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, posing no threat to land but sending waves toward Mexico and likely Southern California. Forecasters said Karina could strengthen further before fluctuating in intensity over warm waters. Tropical Storm Lowell, also far from land, was expected to reach hurricane strength soon as it tracked west toward the central Pacific. Lowell may pass near Hawaii later in the week, though it currently presents no immediate danger.
