Rubio says Trump to take up to 60 days to weigh Russia sanctions

The United States will take up to 60 days to decide whether to impose sanctions and tariffs on Russia and countries that buy its energy, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday waiving the measures, which were required under the Graham Act and had been due to take effect next week, arguing the economic impact and the global energy situation needed to be assessed first. The waiver drew criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who warned it would embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin and prolong the war. Rubio also defended a separate agreement to increase Russian diesel shipments to the United States, saying the fuel would be sold on global markets regardless and that Washington wanted its share. The moves come weeks before November’s midterm elections, with the administration under pressure over high energy prices as the war with Iran disrupts oil supplies.
