Edmundo Gonzalez, the Venezuelan opposition candidate, is claiming that masked men abducted his son-in-law in Caracas. Gonzalez ran in Venezuela’s presidential election in July, and although incumbent President Nicolas Maduro claimed victory, the election was highly contested. The U.S. government recognized Gonzalez as the legitimate president-elect. Gonzalez currently has a warrant out for his arrest in Venezuela. He has gone into exile in Spain, but pledges to return to Venezuela. Maduro will be sworn in for his third term on Friday, and the alleged kidnapping of Gonzalez’s son may be connected to the Venezuelan government’s violent crackdown against protestors and political opponents.
