SpaceX’s upcoming Falcon 9 rideshare mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base will carry prototype satellites embedded with Google AI hardware into low Earth orbit. The uncrewed flight serves as the official operational debut for Alphabet’s experimental “Project Suncatcher” moonshot initiative. The mission aims to evaluate how Google Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) survive intense launch forces, cosmic radiation, and thermal extremes in space. By leveraging near-constant sunlight in orbit, the long-term initiative explores whether space-based data centers can circumvent severe earthly power and grid constraints. While this initial test features a modest setup, it paves the way for future high-bandwidth satellite clusters capable of executing large-scale machine learning workloads in orbit.
