U.S. Bans Imports from Three Major Chinese Genomics Companies Under Forced Labor Act

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has added three major Chinese genomics companies, BGI Genomics Co. Ltd, MGI Tech Co. Ltd, and Shenzhen BGI Technology Co. Ltd (BGI Group) to the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act Entity List. The designation officially bans imports of products and materials associated with the firms into the United States, citing allegations that they worked with the government of Xinjiang to facilitate the forced labor of Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities. The latest trade enforcement action runs parallel to broader U.S. regulatory moves targeting cross-border biotechnology ties, including proposed Treasury restrictions on outbound investments in Chinese biotech sectors. Beijing has consistently rejected accusations of forced labor and human rights abuses in Xinjiang, dismissing such trade restrictions as politically motivated protectionism. Industry analysts note that these compounding export and import controls are forcing global life sciences and healthcare supply chains to aggressively decouple and diversify sourcing away from Chinese entities.
