A Russian military court has sentenced a 49-year-old IT specialist to 13 years in prison on terrorism-financing charges after the cryptocurrency exchange Binance handed Russian investigators his transaction history. The records, provided in response to a Russian request, showed donations of more than $700 to Ukrainian military fundraising campaigns, including appeals to buy medical equipment for Ukrainian soldiers, and prosecutors treated them as key evidence. Rights advocates say dozens of Russians have been convicted in recent years for donations made through crypto platforms to causes later classified as extremist or terrorist, often by people who believed the transactions would keep their identities hidden. Binance, which left Russia in 2023 after the full-scale invasion and Western sanctions, said it does not make or enforce any jurisdiction’s laws or decide how governments use information in legal proceedings, and declined to comment on individual cases.
