Romanian government collapses after no-confidence vote

Romania’s pro-EU government has collapsed following a no-confidence vote.

Romania’s pro‑EU minority government, led by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, was brought down after lawmakers passed a no‑confidence vote with 281 votes, exceeding the required threshold. The collapse raises concerns about Romania’s sovereign debt rating, access to EU funds, and the stability of its currency, which hit a record low against the euro ahead of the vote. President Nicușor Dan said he expects a new pro‑European government to form soon, though coalition parties remain divided and early elections are considered unlikely. Bolojan will stay on as interim premier while Romania faces an August deadline to implement reforms needed to access €10 billion in EU recovery funds.
