Indonesian villagers on Borneo struggle for water as El Niño intensifies peatland fires

Drought deepens hardship across Borneo.

Months without rain have left communities along the Kapuas River struggling to access clean water, forcing many residents to buy supplies and increasing household costs. Experts say an intense El Niño and decades of peatland degradation have worsened drought conditions, while drained peatlands have made the region more vulnerable to severe wildfires. The fires have spread across Borneo, producing thick haze, straining firefighting efforts and prompting government pledges to strengthen prevention and restoration measures. Residents say the crisis has destroyed livelihoods, disrupted river transport and fishing, and left communities uncertain about how long the hardship will continue.
