Strategic intelligence firm Strider Technologies published a report identifying more than 800 People’s Republic of China (PRC) biotechnology companies connected to military, intelligence, or internal security institutions. The identified entities meet the U.S. BIOSECURE Act’s criteria for “biotechnology companies of concern,” which restricts federal procurement and funding due to national security risks. The findings reveal that hundreds of these firms serve as registered suppliers to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) or engage in joint academic research and patent development with military-affiliated entities. Case studies in the report highlight prominent firms like BGI Group and various subsidiaries that collect biological big data and handle sensitive genomic information. Strider urges policymakers and business leaders to rigorously evaluate supply chains, investment flows, and research partnerships to mitigate potential foreign intelligence and data exposure.
