The FBI formally declared a cybersecurity incident after notifying current special agents and support staff that their personal data had been compromised during an intrusion targeting its employment infrastructure. The breach originated via the recruitment and career portal FBIjobs.gov, taking the system offline after the cyber extortion syndicate known as ShinyHunters claimed responsibility. Compromised information reportedly spans roughly 2 to 3 terabytes of records, including names, home addresses, phone numbers, job titles, Social Security numbers, and confidential medical/psychological evaluations from internal systems. The hacking group claimed to have gained remote access and defaced the bureau’s recruitment site by leveraging a zero-day vulnerability in Oracle PeopleSoft software.
