Three Major South Korean Financial Firms Hit by Cyberattacks and Data Breaches

Three prominent South Korean financial institutions including cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb, brokerage Daishin Securities, and asset manager Mirae Asset Global Investments publicly reported data security breaches on Wednesday. Daishin Securities confirmed that personal and credit information for roughly 38,000 customers was leaked, while Bithumb and Mirae Asset initiated urgent internal probes to determine whether member or client data was compromised. Bithumb assured the public that its internal mobile work system was targeted separately from its core cryptocurrency trading platform, leaving digital assets unaffected. The string of concurrent financial sector cyberattacks triggered an immediate, high-level emergency meeting called by South Korea’s presidential office to coordinate defensive countermeasures. Financial authorities and regulators have intensified oversight across the country’s digital and traditional banking infrastructure to curb a mounting wave of security incidents.
